If you are in need of headroom or a clean signal, noise can have an impact as bad as ruining a take. Of&nbsp;course, there is professional software out there designed to eliminate noise, and many softwares come with a tool built in. You may think Reaper is lacking in this area. I can assure you that it is not! ReaFir is an excellent tool in the <a href=\"http:\/\/reaper.fm\/reaplugs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ReaPlugs suite<\/a> which comes&nbsp;with Reaper by default. ReaPlugs is also available as <a href=\"https:\/\/audioordeal.co.uk\/top-free-vsts-of-2019\/\">VST<\/a> for other DAWs to use, so it is luckily not limited to Reaper.<figure><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1313 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/audioordeal.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/More+Than+I+Should.png?resize=640%2C640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/audioordeal.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/More+Than+I+Should.png?w=640&amp;ssl=1 640w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/audioordeal.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/More+Than+I+Should.png?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/audioordeal.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/More+Than+I+Should.png?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/figure><br>So how do we use ReaFir, and what is it? It is essentially a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fast_Fourier_transform\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fast Fourier Transform (FFT)<\/a> dynamic processing unit. It analyses a signal and calculates the frequencies which are present in it as well as their phase.\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To remove noise, you need to set it to subtract mode. What this mode does is measure the background frequencies in a region of silence and subtract them from the final signal, sort of like tareing a scale.<\/p>\n<p>If there is a constant tone at 100Hz, it will subtract that from the recording by the same volume so it doesn&#8217;t show up in the recording. Of course, noise tends to consist of more than one frequency, this measures them all and notes their intensity for subtraction.<\/p>\n<p>To get started you need to build a noise profile by setting a loop on a portion of silence where the noise is present. It is therefore wise to factor in 10-15 seconds at the start or end of a recording for silence to do this.<\/p>\n<p>Check the &#8220;Automatically build noise profile&#8221; box and play the &#8220;silence&#8221;, making sure to avoid any speech in the section being profiled.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"635\" height=\"492\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/audioordeal.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/logo-2Blarger.jpg?resize=635%2C492&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-845\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/audioordeal.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/logo-2Blarger.jpg?w=635&amp;ssl=1 635w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/audioordeal.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/logo-2Blarger.jpg?resize=300%2C232&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>Once a noise profile has been built, uncheck the box and the noise should be significantly reduced. If you don&#8217;t uncheck the box, it will continue measuring the frequencies to subtract, including those of your voice.<\/p>\n<p>Below is an example of the subtraction profile made from a sample of noise, you can see the main frequencies which make up the noise, and their&nbsp;intensities.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-847 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/audioordeal.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/logo-2Blarger-1.jpg?resize=629%2C485&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"629\" height=\"485\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/audioordeal.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/logo-2Blarger-1.jpg?w=629&amp;ssl=1 629w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/audioordeal.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/logo-2Blarger-1.jpg?resize=300%2C231&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 629px) 100vw, 629px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n<p>This plugin can be used for more than just noise removal. Try playing about with building a subtraction profile out of various samples to see how they affect the sound.
